SEXUAL HARASSMENT ON PUBLIC BUSES AND TRAINSPORT
What is Sexual Harassment?
“Any unwelcome sexual advance, request for sexual favour, verbal or physical conduct or gesture of a sexual nature, or any other behaviour of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation to another. It can include a one-off incident or a series of incidents. Sexual harassment may be deliberate, unsolicited and coercive.”
The Issue
Sexual harassment on public transport contributes to a culture that discriminates women and girls and affects them physically, psychologically and economically. 90% of women have been subjected to sexual harassment on public buses and trains, according to the findings of a study1 commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Sri Lanka in 2015. According to the Census on Population and Housing, Sri Lanka’s female labour force participation has decreased from 39.5% in 2006 to 34.7% in 2014.
